I was looking so forwards to this book, but in the end I found a lot of things to be unhappy about. the production was sub par..some of the art was dark and murky compared to other books with frazettas art.. that , in and of itself , wasnt the worst thing...the text...needed editing...I found a story that was repeated and one that was never finished being told..it stopped for a few pages of pictures and then some other something began..the stories were great...but franks own son mis-informed us on a few topics...then he would discuss a particular piece of artwork and there were no visuals to go along with it..just seemed like a book put out too fast without being edited and wasn't concise...maybe rushed to take advantage of franks passing while it was relatively current..i know there was the whole family dispute at the end of mr frazettas life , and don't mind that it wasn't mentioned much because that's a family thing but the circle of franks life felt full of holes and incomplete..i agree, a book for the completists but beware of your expectations..

Frank Frazetta Art and Remembrances Frank Frazetta Jr Daniel Herman Frank Frazetta 9781613450550 Books Reviews

An odd book from beginning to end. Some nice previously unpublished photos, a few interesting (if unsubstantiated) anecdotes, writing that is sloppy with details and rife with factual errors, and art that has been often printed over the years (and often printed elsewhere with better quality than in ART AND REMEMBRANCES) makes this something for the curious completest, but it is certainly not the definitive book about Frank Frazetta. Instead of exhibiting a deep knowledge about and understanding of his father's career, Mr. Frazetta Jr. shows just the opposite--and he avoids discussing the notorious circumstances surrounding the 2009 closing of the Frazetta Museum in Pennsylvania. He barely acknowledges the existence of his siblings much less the widely reported legal disputes with them that followed his father's death in 2010. As such, ART AND REMEMBRANCES paints a very incomplete picture of one of fantasy art's most beloved figures; it's obvious that the author's memory is either very selective or very faulty. Academics should also note that, even though it's given a full page, Frazetta did NOT paint the movie poster for WHO'S MINDING THE MINT? An embarrassing mistake that will undoubtedly confuse researchers in the coming years.
Presents a different side of Frazetta's life and work than previous books, but it's not perfect. The artwork is fantastic, and hopefully readers and fans can appreciate that it's not intended to be yet another showcase of finished paintings. This volume focuses on early (very early) drawings and comic work as well as roughs and works in progress, most of which have never before been published.

Correspondingly, the accompanying narrative attempts to personalize the man behind the brush through the use of family stories and first and second-hand experiences with Frazetta. As unique a perspective as dialog provides, it is also the area where this book falls short. Some stories are certainly unique and lend a terrific insight into Frazetta's motivation, but others seem out of place and inconsequential given the audience.

Unfortunately, another place that the narrative falls short is in editing. There are numerous grammatical errors, misspellings, and even an instance where an entire section of text is printed twice. For a volume of this quality, there really is no excuse for these types of errors to make it though the printing process without someone - anyone - catching them. One thing I did like was the large format printing of early comic pages. It would have been easy to combine several pages to save space, but using high quality scans and printing them at a larger size was the right move.

Doubtless there will be many Frazetta collectors that won't be able to live without this book. The re-read value for me seems rather low. Having read the text once, I probably won't read it again, and as unique as the art is, I'm not drawn to return viewings time after time like I am with the finished paintings showcased in other collections.
It doesn't get much better than this with all the images by FF in the book and some text by his son as well. A great read and a book I'll be holding onto.
