Welcome to the Slab. A vast orbiting slum where rats grow big and sweat falls in rain. There’s a stranger in town, a stranger with claws and a penchant for killing assassins. Finding him is the job of Inspector Alex McLeod, detective, disfigured war veteran and reluctant widower. Some days are worse than others on the Slab but today is going to be a gem.
Slab City Blues A Science Fiction Detective Story eBook Anthony Ryan
Interesting theme and set-up with a William Gibson kind of vibe, but the pay off at the end falls a bit flat and the misspellings and grammatical mistakes make it tough to get fully emerged in the world the author is trying to create. Not sure how a future world that involves gene-splicing manages to create vampires either, but I suppose that might be explained in a future volume. This one is definitely worth a read for anyone that enjoys biopunk, but it feels like it could have been so much more with a good editor and another draft.Product details

Slab City Blues A Science Fiction Detective Story eBook Anthony Ryan Reviews
Short, sharp, out there. Does not waste a word. Fantasy and sci fi genius. Need more please mr Ryan ... Thanks
A great story that introduces us to a world I am ready to see more of. Interesting characters. Interesting concepts. It has a very Gibson and Dick feel to it with a really intriguing bit of bio-punk thrown in. My only wish is that is was longer, but the title does call it a short story, so there's no false advertising here. Really good stuff. Definitely worth the cost.
This was an interesting short story set on a planet in a futuristic society. I liked Alex (the detective), and the other cast, including Father Bob and Freak. This was completely different from Anthony Ryan's fantasy series, but it was well written and engaging. I'll likely keep going with these!
While I know Anthony Ryan primarily from his Raven's Shadow series, I gave this a try thinking it could be interesting. I was immediately hooked and fell into the gene-splicing, gun-blazing weird vibe of the Slab. The characters were awesome, the setting believable and still felt alien and mysterious. Overall, this is a series I want to pick up and read to completion. I'm eager to jump into the next story and go back to the Slab already.
Good enough that I just paid for this and the second story despite reading them for free several years ago. Now I have to reread since there is a 5th story.
I really like Anthony Ryan's books. I wish he would do a full length Slab City Novel...I'd give that a 5 star. The 4 star is for making me read out of order and then spend quite a bit of time trying to determine what the order was) I read all the slab city books and really enjoyed them but I admit that I bought the first one because I have to wait until July for the next installment of Ryan's Raven Shadow series. So if this was a review of Anthony Ryan it would be a 5.5 star. I thoroughly enjoy his books.
To be fair, first the bad
The setup in the beginning is a bit confusing, and it took a page or two for me to get oriented. For examole, there are several locations with different names being 'thrown' at the reader, which is a little hard to keep track of.
But after the first two pages - wow!
Fast paced, action balanced with character development (yes, in a short story!), likeable characters - basically a fun and thought provoking sci fi short
I am definitely going to read the next one in the series.
